A doksa is a seasonal settlement in the Himalayas, typically occupied during the summer months. These settlements were traditionally established by herders in the Lungnak region of Zanskar Valley. Each year, a few family members from every household would travel to their regular grazing lands, located in the higher parts of the village, accompanied by their yaks, dimos (female yaks), goats, and sheep. For these herders, the doksa was truly a home away from home.
Our story began generations ago, when our great-grandfathers migrated from Kien village in Zanskar to Rarik-Chhika village in Lahaul. Their journey, from subsistence farming to cultivating diverse cash crops—including what is now considered the world’s finest potato seed—was driven by their unwavering determination to build a better life for themselves and future generations. The earnings from these crops, combined with their work as horsemen, enabled them to provide modern education to the next generation.
Doksa BnB Manali is not just a milestone in the legacy of doksas but also a living tribute to the vision and resilience of our ancestors.
